When natural disasters strike, an onslaught of legal issues can make rebuilding harder for affected communities. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy destroyed tens of thousands of homes. LSC-funded programs were there to meet the unprecedented need for legal aid in affected areas.
In the aftermath, LSC grantees provided help for storm-related issues including improper evictions, denial of insurance claims, delays in critical repairs and home repair scams. Local legal aid lawyers also recruited and trained pro bono attorneys and worked with community recovery groups for long-term restorations.
